On November 9th, 2017, the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Espérance Nyirasafari, accompanied by the State Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Nsengiyumva Fulgence, the ECD Coordinator, Dr Anita Asiimwe, District Officials, Global Communities Deputy Chief of Party, DUHAMIC ADRI Senior Management and USAID

Twiyubake staff visited the Early Childhood Development Center “Teta Kibondo” located in Huye district, Huye sector, Nyakagezi cell, Mbuba village.

Early childhood development, which focuses on the period from birth up to six years of age, is a critical window of opportunity for a child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development during which the family environment has a critical influence on child development.

The ECD center was established on May 29th, 2016, by Global Communities partner organization DUHAMIC ADRI which is implementing the USAD Twiyubake program in Huye district. The program selected and trained facilitators and caregivers on ECD policy and pillars, positive parenting, hygiene and nutrition. In addition, it equipped the center with materials according to MIGEPROF standards. Currently, Teta Kibondo is hosting 65 children divided into groups of 2-3 years and 4-5 years.

The Minister and the delegation appreciated the education level of the children and how the ECD center is putting into practice the five ECD pillars which are education, hygiene, health, nutrition, and child protection.

They were interested to hear how the program is implemented and appreciated the role of the community in owning the ECD: the role of the ECD facilitators, caregivers, parents committee and parents. The visitors encouraged the community to craft handmade toys, focus on child nutrition and continue to be involved in child education.
